Translation contest winners
Thank you to everyone who submitted to the contest. The editors were humbled by the wealth of diverse voices and languages that comprised the submission pool for our first annual contest. Below are the two winning poems, as selected by the editors.
from Black and Blue Partition (Lémistè 2) // Monachoachi // translated from the Creole by Patricia Hartland
"...The Three talking drums, / the antique séele among them, / its stretched batrachian hide / Like a traitor heart, speeches rosy devastations / Conjures first rhythms, hearing / webbed thunderstorm hands."
london paris new york // Ruxandra Novac // translated from the Romanian by Sarah Thompson
"Written on my packet of cigarettes / london paris new york / but on my heart is written Romania / the fur of history covering statues / a will that abruptly names you / keeper of the world’s treasures/ a gas mask for me and me alone..."
